Rick and Nick begin today’s episode with an update from Rick on his recent Spring Break family trip to Legoland and Sea World in Orlando. He gives some insights into what they most enjoyed at each park. Nick gives an update on his experiments with Costco Just Bare chicken nuggets and attempts to get the taste of them to match Chick-Fil-A. Rick recommends Aldi red-bag breaded chicken filets.
Dr. Rick reads through his somewhat lengthy blog from this past week – “The Newspaper Tower Challenge.” Dr. Nick shares his reactions, providing some valuable insights regarding the importance of fostering cooperation as a school administrator. They guys discuss the challenges with the often adversarial relationships between teachers, parents, and administrators.
In the “Building the Brochure” segment, Dr. Nick and Dr. Rick enter into the second half of the Search Institute’s developmental assets. This week, they discuss #21: Achievement Motivation – Young person is motivated to do well in school; and #22: School Engagement – Young person is actively engaged in learning. Dr. Nick shares an incredibly well written purpose statement from his district regarding student engagement and Dr. Rick shares a school counseling perspective regarding an important related construct – School Connectedness – and recommends the 5-question assessment from the ADD Health survey for counselors and administrators looking to assess school connectedness and climate.
The Every Rose has Its Thorn segment this week is an interesting topic for anyone who uses the bathroom. The guys boldly go where no podcast has gone before (at least that they know of) and discuss the best and worst things related to toilets. Yep, that’s right – toilets…..Proving once again that they guys don’t hesitate to talk about literally anything to help make the world a better place.
The last segment finds the guys digging back into the e-mailbag to respond to fan questions. The first question comes from a fan in South Africa who tasks the guys with defining success. Nick gives an amazing insightful response along with a powerful quote for consideration. Rick talks brownies, It’s a Wonderful Life, and maximizing potential in his response. Lastly, the guys respond to a fan question about TV/movie reboots that they would like to see. Nick is ready for another take on Knight Rider, while Rick would like to see a continuation of his favorite sci fi show – Firefly. They guys also briefly discuss possibilities of a new Jaws movie and mess that was Jaws 4: The Revenge.
