Rick gets things started this week by sharing about his presentation with a colleague over the weekend. While things may have appeared relatively smooth to session participants, here is “the rest of the story.” Nick then shares a bit about the Pink concert that he had been planning for his daughters for months and reflects upon a great lesson about the importance of perspective.

Dr. Rick reads his blog from this week entitled “I’m So Proud of You! What a Terrible Thing to Say?” Rick and Nick share thoughts and reactions to using or perhaps overusing this verbal reinforcement with kids. The guys discuss alternate responses and the importance of nurturing a growth mindset.

In the “Building the Brochure” segment, Dr. Nick and Dr. Rick continue their investigation into the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets. This week, the guys tackle Assets #31 – Restraint—Young person believes it is important not to be sexually active or to use alcohol or other drugs. AND #32 – Planning and decision making—Young person knows how to plan ahead and make choices. Rick has some suggestions for parents in regards to having “the talk” and Nick shares a comical experience from his past. Both gentlemen discuss the importance of setting good goals and the unique opportunities that school courses and extra curricular activities have the help kids secure this goal.

The Every Rose has Its Thorn segment this week sees the guys discussing the best and worst things about Summer Blockbusters. Both the guys have some general thoughts about the beauty of air conditioning, buttery popcorn, and pure escapism and then some specific movies from Summer 2023 that they loved, including Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Barbie.

The last segment finds the guys digging back into the mailbag to respond to fan questions. Candace from North Carolina presses the guys to identify a job that they would like if they weren’t an educator. Nick seems to have some trouble with this one but finds his way back to professional wrestling, perhaps to no one’s surprise. Rick selects the job of a tour guide on a dolphin cruise who gets to tell corny Dolphin Dad Jokes, again, perhaps to no one’s surprise.
